If being a recluse means gaining more experience for the sake of your art, then Abalal Rahiman lived a fulfilling life. Living on the patronage of Kolhapur’s royalty—he returned from Bombay to Kolhapur in 1887 after the sudden death of his mother—it was in the Twenties that his works showed his complete engagement with the Kolhapur landscape. He painted the lake at Sandhyamath at different times of the day, keenly observing the changing effects of light on water, excelling in chiaroscuro.
