Having completed his studies from Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, Abalal Rahiman became proficient in handling various genres in the academic realism style. He led an intensely lonely life, relying on Kolhapur’s royalty for livelihood, unable to exhibit his work widely. These constraints, however, never diluted Rahiman’s fine skill as an artist. This Untitled work, besides fulfilling all the demands of a great portrait, shows highlights in gold, which is an extension of Rahiman’s training under his father in illuminating texts for the holy Quran.
