In his long career, Partha Pratim Deb has experimented ceaselessly, both in mediums and materials, and in themes and concepts. Though known for his works exploring dark humour, he is also a master at expressing lived reality. The Achievers appears to be a homage to a particular football team, whose members are caught in a motivational huddle. Calcutta, where the artist is based, is home to some legendary football clubs of India and it is not uncommon to spot uniformed local teams playing at the Maidan—the city’s vast stretch of green in the centre—on any given day.
