A man of many—and exceptional—talents, Baburao Painter was a self-taught painter, film director, screenplay writer, art director, actor, cinematographer, and much more. He was among the first few—or perhaps, the very first—to sketch costumes and illustrate scenes of films. Painting in the style of academic realism, Painter, well, paints a haunting image of a village woman from Maharashtra, perfecting the details of her face, her garments, her modest jewellery, her belongings. What’s most striking, however, is the stunning horizon that the artist captures.
