It’s impossible not to have tears in your eyes when one views this work, which shows a young child hugging a female figure, probably her mother, who is hanging from the noose tied to a tree. The woman looks pregnant, and the image immediately grips the viewer making one uncomfortable, helpless. V. Nageshkar was in Europe during World War II and there’s a possibility that this work from the later decades of his career still harks back to that violent time.
