Vishwanath Nageshkar was one of the earliest Indian artists to travel abroad to study—he went to Paris in 1930 to study at École National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and spent the bulk of his career living across the continent. The oeuvre of the artist, who was born in Goa, was shaped by the contemporary realities of Europe, reflecting the concerns of the marginalised, including women. The stockinged woman in this work seated sideways on a chair seems like an office-goer. Her awkward stance puts her at a disadvantage, making one wonder about the reason for her apparent discomfort.
