Bishamber Khanna was born in Peshawar (in present-day Pakistan) and studied arts in Lahore and Delhi. An active member of the Delhi Shilpi Chakra, Khanna earned renown in his lifetime for his novel experiments with the complex technique of enamelling, used in embellishing jewellery, to create exquisite abstract paintings, such as this Untitled one. Though not explicitly tantric in orientation, this painting carries symbolic forms which could be interpreted as an ode to the core of tantra philosophy, of procreation and union with the universal soul.
