A plein air artist, M. S. Joshi was adept at imagining and constructing focal strategies for his paintings. This allowed him to paint in a way that provided attention to all the elements that he wanted to focus on. Khandala in Rain reveals Joshi’s expertise in watercolour landscapes, which he rendered with a great flourish with his remarkable brushstrokes. He creates in this painting the thunderous clouds, the rain lashing down, which he paints in downward brushstrokes—in a largely grey colour palette—along with a train passing the valley.
