Danish artist Hugo Vilfred Pedersen travelled to the east to meet his older brother who worked at a tobacco plantation in Sumatra, an Indonesian island. He spent nearly two decades in the eastern hemisphere, some years of which were spent travelling through India, making charming paintings of the country’s people and landscapes. In this sun-washed oil, Pedersen shows his dexterity as a master colourist, as he not only honestly renders a temple and its details, but also succeeds in capturing the play of light and shadow on various elements of its architecture.
