Though a majority of Somnath Hore’s prints focussed on the suffering of the ordinary person, the poor, the powerless, the hungry, sometimes the artist’s work revealed his passion for the simple motifs and patterns found in villages, particularly those created in Bengali households during festival time. This Untitled intaglio, then, could well be a homage to the artist’s own memory of his childhood, of quaint moments amidst otherwise tragic events stemming from the violent politics that he witnessed while growing up.
