Jaya Ganguly’s brushstrokes in many of her paintings are done with a sureness, a boldness. The colours stand out for their richness and the sentiment that they evoke. She paints here a brilliant background in yellow, which aids in building up the image further. The stance of this female figure is diva-like and a quick glance at the work makes us think of her as a person of privilege. A closer look, however, reveals that one of the hands of the woman is maimed while the other seems missing.
