S. Dhanapal responded to a range of religious iconographies in his work as much as secular themes, and most of his works display popular iconographies of the classical as well as folk religious practices. This work is based on the famous biblical theme ‘Christ Carrying the Cross’, where Christ is depicted on his way to his crucifixion surrounded by a group of worshipers and not in a procession, with Dhanapal’s expressive rendering capturing the pathos of the scene.
