The innovative approach that defined the spirit of investigation, particularly in Indian sculpture, was a conscious effort by S. Dhanapal. Eclectic in his choice of media, which ranged from terracotta and cement to wood and bronze, Dhanapal evolved potentially charged but simplified visualisations of subjects and themes that fascinated him. In Mother and Child, which he created in the Fifties, not only does he acquire the fluidity in the medium, he also creates an expressive, warm, and tender moment between a maternal figure and her child.
