A pioneering abstract expressionist, Hari Ambadas Gade was a science graduate whose love for landscape painting took him to the Nagpur School of Art to study. Guided by fellow-Progressive S. H. Raza, Gade soon perfected the art of rendering rich, luminous landscapes in an abstract language with expressionist overtones. This Untitled oil is an example of his mature style of expressionist landscapes, whose rich shades evoke the lustrous colours of soil in peninsular India. He travelled often to capture diverse scenery, which reflected in his wide repertoire of works.
