A member of the Progressive Artists’ Group, Hari Ambadas Gade gives an insight into the remarkable colourist that he was through this work, Horse and Rider. The artist roughly divides the area into a colour palette of ochre-pink on the one hand, and grey on the other. He creates bold outlines for our immediate engagement but negates that exercise for the smaller figures—also shown holding weaponry like the ‘rider’—leaving them almost camouflaged. Gade celebrates colour and figuration and the spatial arrangement in the work, making it noteworthy.
