Rameshwar Broota is known for turning his back on lyricism and stylisation, a talent displayed by the broad-brush work of this portrait of a classmate made in 1964 where the figure is introduced by a structured form. This work with a brooding atmosphere was made a year after his graduation from the Delhi Polytechnic of Art (now the College of Art) when the artist began his career as a teacher at Jamia Millia Islamia Higher Secondary School while intermittently teaching at his alma mater.
