Watercolour wash on paper pasted on Masonite board
Translated from Hindi to English, Sangharsh stands for ‘struggle’ and stems from B. N. Arya’s own journey when, as a child, he witnessed, along with his family, the horror of Partition. Death and destruction were themes close to Arya, always reminding him of the struggles faced by people. Rising from the raging blue waters are ghostly apparitions, demon-like, with piercing, unusual eyes that continue to metamorphose into human skulls and other reptile-like creatures. If nightmare had to be visually described, Sangharsh would fit perfectly.
