Chiefly a watercolourist, B. N. Arya perfected the wash technique in the style of the neo-Bengal School. The title ‘Lama’ refers to a spiritual guide by those who follow Vajrayana Buddhism in the Indian Himalayas and Tibet. Arya, in this serene painting, captures a monk at rest while traversing the snow-clad mountains. The tranquillity of the mountains is emphasised by the monk’s faraway gaze and the still of the musical instrument in his hand, allowing the artist to capture the most ordinary moment in an extraordinary way.
