Exhibition Walkthrough

Often referred to as an artist of the people, Maqbool Fida Husain (1913–2011) rose from his humble origins to become one of India’s foremost modernist painters. Born in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, in British-ruled India, Husain began his artistic journey as a billboard painter in Mumbai. Following India’s Independence, in an era characterised by ideals of democracy and nation-building, Husain’s art was marked by the quest to define a new modernity. This led him, in 1947, to co-found the Progressive Artists’ Group, a pivotal moment in the evolution of Indian art, ushering in a language of modernism previously unexplored in the country.

Husain had an intrinsic ability to forge deep connections with people, many of whom became subjects in his art. His approachability and accessibility made him a much-loved figure, and his eccentricities—such as walking barefoot and painting in unconventional settings like concerts, homes and restaurants—added to his distinctive charm. A maverick driven by instinct and spontaneity, Husain was both widely popular and controversial. His unconventional approach to life and art drew admiration, but also, at times, sparked significant debate in his homeland. Persistent threats eventually forced him into self-exile, yet, his heart remained tethered to his country, a longing that stayed with him until his final days.

Husain: The Timeless Modernist spans six decades of the artist’s prolific career, showcasing his versatility across various media and affirming his status as a true savant of the arts. This exhibition is a tribute to the master whose every stroke on the canvas was, at its core, a love letter to the nation he cherished, and a reflection on his timeless spirit and its enduring impact on the world of art.
