National Art Treasure (non-exportable work)

Amrita Sher-Gil, who famously said, ‘India belongs to me’, changed the face of modern art in the country and paved the course for the next generation of artists to follow. She was able to bring her Western training to the existing traditions of Indian art and meld them to express contemporary reality. In a rare sculpture of tigers, which was made in the last year of her life, the manifold skills of the artist reveal themselves. The two tigers are shown with a fluid grace, with long, flowing lines. Their seemingly relaxed postures contrast with their alert and agile expressions, conveying energy and power of their being. The only known sculpture by the artist in existence, this is an extremely rare work of historical importance.
