A student of Abanindranath Tagore who founded and subsequently propagated Bengal School, Sarada Charan Ukil became one of the pioneers of this artistic movement, painting in pale and sentimental colour washes in his art. This Untitled work from the Thirties bears witness to the strength of Ukil’s artistic skill capturing the episode of Ramayana when Ram, at the behest of Sita, goes to hunt the golden deer or Maricha. Ukil creates a soft, moody palette and captures in vivid detail the expressions of the two figures, human and animal.
