Delhi’s observatory, popularly known as the Jantar Mantar, was built in the 1720s, during the reign of Muhammad Shah, by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur on land which had been granted to his ancestors. The first of two views shows the largest instrument at the site, the Samrat Yantra, which is in effect a giant sundial.
