James Talboys Wheeler was a historian known for his four-volume History of India, published between 1867 and 1881. In 1877, Wheeler wrote the History of Imperial Assemblage at Delhi, which was meant to be a comprehensive account of the event. The publication incorporated historical sketches, photographic views of Delhi, and portraits of several Maharajas along with Queen Victoria and Viceroy Lytton interwoven with the descriptive narrative. Wheeler hoped that presenting pictures of India, both past and present, would ‘bring out the contrast between the state of India under the Native Government and its present condition under the British Rule.’
