L. Munuswamy had the rare ability to abstract the human portrait into jagged areas drawn with an emotive fervour. He played with unusually juxtaposed colour areas, painting portraits to arouse tremendous sentiment and feeling. Young Girl is representative of Munuswamy’s artistic technique and his grip on visual grammar. The artist pares down the strictly academic style of portraiture to evolve a figure that displays his finesse and skill in the genre by concentrating on brush strokes that are applied with a unique grace.
