Abanindranth Tagore’s training stood him in good stead in his ability to paint portraits with a high likeness to the physical attributes of his subject, even though he chose to soften the result in the manner of the wash style of the Bengal School of which he was a proponent. This evocative portrait faces us off with a young man looking steadily towards at the viewer, his gaze unflinching. Tagore fleshes in the person without providing an outline, thereby softening the result.
