Though the genre of still-life painting—that depicts inanimate objects in a group—has been around for centuries, it emerged as a distinct specialisation in Western painting in the late sixteenth century. Common images associated with still-life, for long, have been flowers, vases, tables with food, fruit, etc. However, over the centuries, artists have brought their individuality to the genre by depicting various other objects. In that context, this work by Nataraj Sharma—Still-life, Machine Parts, bears his unique language as he has depicted objects whose form, function and relationship with society forms the crux of his practise.
