Paritosh Sen, who trained in Madras, became acquainted with European modernism in Paris and sharpened his worldview in New York. As a founder member of Calcutta Group, 1943, he believed in a universal and international language of art. This oil, Head, must therefore be viewed in that context; the artist stays true to his basic characteristic of depicting reality but uses Western idioms to reflect the same. Coming from 1969, this painting of a face seems a premonitory pronouncement of the decade to follow with its darkness and gloom ignited periodically by sparks of light.
