The doyen of Indian modern art, B. C. Sanyal’s artistic journey was dotted with experimentation in various techniques, genres, and mediums. A painter, printmaker but primarily a sculptor, Sanyal straddled all roles with ease and enthusiasm. Many of his sculptures were initially paintings or vice versa. His sculptures have a smoothness, an attention to detail in features, as seen in Shrouded Woman, thus, making them stand out. Sanyal, in fact, did create many such female figures, with veils and scarfs covering them, in his paintings.
