Despite training in the academic style, Khagen Roy’s command over mythology, the miniature tradition and the mural style of Ajanta caves was commendable. This Untitled work exhibits Roy’s skill in the manner that he portrays the central figure of the woman with deer as a distinct presence. The female figure appears gentle while the act of giving water to one of the animals adds to her persona. The attention to her garments, jewellery, and the overall detailing of the forest accentuate the painting’s charm.
