The Foot Bridge is an example of K. C. S. Paniker’s works of the early Forties and Fifties, which recorded the pristine beauty of the world of light, colours and forms of rural India, particularly Kerala. Capturing the lush green environment, the artist creates a scene of people on—and near—a footbridge to cross wet, fragile, marshy land. Neither impressionistic nor nostalgically romantic in the tradition of the Bengal School, it is rendered in heavy brushstrokes, the visual patterning of light and shade suggesting abstraction.
