What makes the members of the Madras Modern movement stand out, and this includes S. Nandagopal as well, is how most of them, if not all, consciously interrogated the line to create dynamic new forms while, at the same time, turning to life and nature for inspiration to create fresh and vital new experiences in their artistic practice. It was a relevant opinion on the need to draw inspiration from—and create—a strong regional identity to configure responses to modernism. This Untitled painting, then, exemplifies the ethos of the group.
