From her knotted hemp sculptures, Mrinalini Mukherjee moved to other organic mediums like clay and wax. Her works invariably had different forms and scales; however, the elements of nature remained as of before. This vase-like piece in terracotta, in a phallic, cylindrical form, bears serpent motifs all around made as bas relief and perforations, ending with a raised serpent hood canopy on top. Mukherjee draws here on similar terracotta vases made in Bengal’s Bankura district as an offering to Manasa, the goddess of fertility and prosperity.
