BOOK
With contributory essays by Yashodhara Dalmia on F. N. Souza, and Gregory Salter and Valerie Murray-Chandra on Avinash Chandra, Contours of Identity investigates the artistic practice of the two émigré artists in 1950s-60s London. While markedly different in style, both are notable for their bold explorations of sexuality while revealing complex negotiations with their cultural identities in Western contexts.

Avinash Chandra abandoned landscapes completely in the 1960s, focusing instead on emerging human forms. His earlier oils were replaced by inks, which he enjoyed for their fluidity and expressiveness. Alita Chandra, daughter of the artist Avinash Chandra, reflects on the transcultural influences on his painting and his preoccupation with female subjects.
