An inveterate traveller, Kanwal Krishna traversed the length of the mighty mountains from Afghanistan in the west to Tibet in the east with his paints and brushes, capturing the likeness, essence and spirit of the Himalayas in his works. In between, he also travelled to other places such as Mandu in present-day Madhya Pradesh, to which this watercolour pays an ode. Through rich colours, swift brush strokes and a nebulous background, Krishna brings focus on a group of six women, perhaps, engaged in weaving straw mats or baskets in the afternoon as the work is awash with bright light.
