A true child of all-encompassing modernism sweeping Asia from the early years of the twentieth century, George Keyt brought multiple distinctive elements in his art, the highlight of which were the cubist lines made curvaceous to add sensuality or a sense of eroticism to his South Asian figures. A highly regarded artist in his native Sri Lanka as well as in India, his art epitomised courage at a time when South Asia was finding its independent political moorings. In this oil, a village belle admires a life-size nude statue with a rather wistful expression.
