Training in sculpture in Paris, frequent trips to Europe and a decade spent practising art in London had a profound impact on the modernist vocabulary of Chintamoni Kar, as is evident in the rendition of an Indian subject in this bronze. The term gana comes from Sanskrit and was widely used in ancient India to refer to social elite, belonging to administrative councils. Kar, who was the first Indian to be elected member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, gives flight to the gana in this work, alluding to their take off for higher goals.
