A passionate kiss between a man and a woman has remained an important theme with artists throughout the history of art. Amongst modern sculptors, Auguste Rodin and Constantin Brancusi created two of the most well-known versions of this intimate moment. This bronze work by Chintamoni Kar is a brilliant, patinated sculpture capturing not just the kiss itself but also the lyrical beauty of the moment through the fluidity of forms; it is markedly different from an untitled rendition of kiss that he made in terracotta. The high, two-tiered pedestal adds elevation, symbolising the place a kiss enjoys in the first flush of romance.
