English painter George Chinnery, known for his realistic landscapes of India and China, trained as a portraitist which also earned him handsome commissions. However, it is his naturalistic landscapes of the East that perpetuate his fame to this day. Chinnery travelled in India between 1802 and 1825, making portraits and landscapes, and this small watercolour captures the setting sun on the ramparts of the fort of Jhansi. It’s the quick yet deft brushstrokes of the work that reveal the artist’s mastery over the medium.
