Zarina used focal strategies in her art and while she stuck to geometric devices and an understanding of minimalism, her art encouraged the viewer to engage with it and create its own impression. The dialogue or even the stillness that she conveyed through her art was important. The lines were ‘borders’ in Hashmi’s eyes, a throwback to a time when she longed to call a place her ‘home’. She wanted those lines to keep shifting, perhaps even disappear, but they continued to pose as barricades.
