This is a seminal lithograph from the oeuvre of Satish Gujral, whose early work was defined by his heart-rending expression of the aftermath of Partition, an epochal event of which he was both victim and witness. It was created the same year as his well-known oil paintings in the Partition series capturing the excruciating grief of the people who had lost their homes and their dear ones. Through strong, forceful lines evoking movement and violence, this Untitled lithograph shows the anguish of a figure barely able to resist the forces rupturing its life, over which it has no control.
