Satish Gujral was a tireless experimenter who did not let his hearing and speech impairment become an obstacle to his career. This small Untitled work belies the fact that Gujral was also a creator of monumental murals. Coming after his Mexican exposure, it combines his sensibility acquired by training abroad with a quest to search for an idiom rooted in Indian traditions. With its celebratory colours and motifs depicting anthropomorphic creatures, it is an ode to folk and tribal paintings from across the country, perhaps as a preparatory drawing for one of his murals.
