Otto Rothfeld wrote the book, Women of India, in 1920, which was illustrated by M. V. Dhurandhar. The artist, who excelled in academic realism, also created independent portraits of women of which this Untitled watercolour is an example. His subjects came from his family, as also from his observations of life in Bombay and Kolhapur. This rare introduces partial sketches of three women, one of whom disappears outside the frame. They appear to be women from Maharashtrian middle class going about their daily chores.
