Sunayani Devi’s thread paintings offer another dimension to her practice long before experiments with different mediums became the norm. Embroidering was one of the tasks women from respectable families undertook, meticulously copying designs from Western journals, or from women’s periodicals. Sunayani Devi’s art, on the other hand, is entirely original and reminiscent of her lines and choice of colours in her paintings. This Untitled painting depicts saint Chaitanya embracing a tree as a symbol of life. The artist’s clean, clear lines show her skill.
