Austrain artist Walter Langhammer created this luminescent oil on canvas a few years before he would escape Nazi Germany to British India, to make Bombay his home. This realist depiction of a big boat under construction or repair carries distinct strokes of European impressionism, yet it’s his use of light that shows the shape of things to come. The painting is almost awash with sunlight, something that would get accentuated in Langhammer’s works produced in India, and also much later, when he would leave India to return to Austria for good.
