Christian iconography and themes—the subject of crucifixion, Madonna and Jesus, Pietà, among others—impacted many Indian modern artists, many of whom travelled on fellowships to Europe and looked closely at some of these timeless themes as works of art. A Rockefeller fellow, Adi Davierwalla was urgently exploring Biblical lore, especially in the Fifties, and Crucifixion, like many of his other works on the subject, is proof of his ability to create his version of Christ on the cross.
