Dutch artist Marius Bauer, who left the prestigious Royal Academy at The Hague, the Netherlands, to study independently, visited India twice on painting expeditions, a trend prevalent among artists of his country at that time. A gifted artist, his landscapes had an overarching dream-like quality despite being made in the realistic genre. This red sandstone building, for instance, is an atypical Mughal monument yet has a wispy quality to it as the red is muted and so are the architectural lines. It’s a busy afternoon that Bauer captures, with soldiers and common citizens ambling about the edifice.
