Benaras

Marius Bauer, the Dutch artist from The Hague, enthralled with his unusual perspectives on popular things, places and events. This oil on canvas, Benaras, for instance, is unlike any other Benaras painting that may have been created by artists down the ages. There is Ganga flowing serenely into the blue horizon, there are birds gliding about, and there are ghats, yet it is so unlike a typical Benaras painting. The artist catches a lone young man ruminating by the banks of the river, unlike the teeming populace and its rituals that have marked most other canvases on this holy city.
