Author Ira Mukhoty and art historian Emily Shovelton in conversation on the women and the legend of the Taj, the contestation around their legitimacy and their implications for the formulation of the idea of the Mughal harem itself.

An astute author and historian, Ira Mukhoty pens masterful works of narrative history. Having authored critically acclaimed works, she aims to reclaim the voices of women that were erased from Indian history.

Dr. Emily Shovelton is a specialist in art from the Islamic world, with a particular interest in Persian manuscripts and Persianate culture in India.

The Mute Eloquence of the Taj Mahal, curated by historian Rana Safvi, positions the Taj itself as a ‘speaking’—though ironically silent—agent through a comprehensive visual narrative, with works spanning from the late eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century.
