This Company Painting from the early years of the nineteenth century comes from a time when the East India Company had fought some major territorial battles and won, and was in the process of documenting the resources of the new colony for Britain’s commercial gains. Both European and Indian artists were employed for the purpose; this work was done by the latter as it is inscribed in Persian. This is a study of the long-tailed shrike found widely distributed across Asia with variations in plumage.
