This exquisite rendition of the Red Fort of Delhi, the 17th century monument built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, must be one of its earliest pictures as the English East India Company had already established itself as a player in the affairs of the subcontinent in the next century, when the Mughal empire was still the prime political force in the subcontinent, even though rapidly dwindling. Again, it bears a Persian signature, indicating that it was an Indian artist who created the likeness of the fort’s Lahori Gate, its main entrance.
